Inhalt

This activity helps you explore how traditional and social media portray gender roles and stereotypes, and how you can take action to challenge these portrayals.

You’ll learn how both traditional media (movies, ads, TV shows) and social media platforms influence how we think about gender and how you can use your voice to challenge harmful stereotypes.

First, get inspired!
Watch a video or documentary about how media and social media shape views on gender roles.

Explore how social media influencers or campaigns are raising awareness about gender equality and promoting positive gender representation.

Now, take action!
Through these activities, you’ll discover how media and social media influence perceptions of gender. You’ll learn how to critically analyse media content and create powerful messages that challenge stereotypes. By gaining confidence in your media literacy skills, you’ll become an advocate for positive representation and inclusivity.
Become media critical: Choose a piece of media or social media content—like an ad, TV show, or TikTok post or similar — and identify the gender roles it portrays. Does it reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes? Write a short post or create a social media post that shares your analysis of how these portrayals affect people’s views on gender roles.
Be brave to challenge gender stereotypes: Use your social media to create content that challenges gender stereotypes or promotes positive gender representation. You can make a meme, video, or post that encourages your followers to reflect on gender equality. Share your content on social media, see how people interact with it, and reflect on the feedback or conversations it starts.
Throw media challenge: Start a media challenge, simple as an online poll or provoking question in your youth group or community. Encourage others to find and share examples of media or social media that challenge stereotypes. Collect these examples and create a presentation or post to share with others. Document the examples and share them online or in a group, reflecting on how they contribute to breaking harmful gender stereotypes.
