Machines are getting smarter. Machines will increasingly do more for us and take over our tasks. Sometimes we work with a machine, but we may also be working for a machine. Man and machine are increasingly working side by side to get things done. Do we have enough competencies to be an equal partner to “our” machines?

In this activity you will work on the skill zone Befriend the machines, this makes you aware:
  • that competences need to be developed to put smart digital assistants to work for you,
  • that it is important to know how to communicate with machines,
  • that skills need to be worked on both – in the digital and physical world,
  • that machines can help you enable your facilitation sessions and make it easier to co-create learning, civic and career pathways of the future.

Digital assistants
Digital assistants now come in many forms, for example robots in healthcare or education, smart speakers via the internet such as Google assistant and Amazon Alexa. It is important to be able to put several smart digital assistants to work for you.

Digital fluency
Nowadays a lot of people use machines and the internet to make things easier. When machines talk to you, you need to know how to talk back, so you can benefit from them to the fullest. Not everything is developed well yet, so mistakes and misunderstandings will still be things that we will see often.
BBC R&D has been running a project Talking with Machines to understand how to design a proper user experience language. In this short video you see how people and machines are learning to talk with each other.

Digital competences
Once we determine our base level of digital competencies, we can learn more and start to create innovative digital content, resources, tools and experiences.
In 2030 it will be important that you can make things happen just as easily in the Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) worlds as in the physical world. Keep working on these skills because the developments in AI, VR and AR are fast. When you know something today, it can be outdated tomorrow.

Digital cooperation
In the context of co-creating Cities of learning and creating content for young people around the world, we can also use machines and digital tools to enable our cooperation processes. Explore which possible tools to use when transferring in-person activities to online activities. For instance, Zoom has became a popular tool due to the increase of people working from home.
